Dr. Darshana Samaraweera is one of Sri Lanka’s foremost authorities in English language education, curriculum reform, and teacher development, with over 30 years of experience spanning higher education, national policy, and international research.

He served as Deputy Director General at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Sri Lanka’s apex body for curriculum development and teacher education. His earlier tenure as Director of the Department of English at NIE from 2013 to 2021 positioned him at the centre of the country’s most significant language education reforms, including national curriculum framework restructuring, GCE O/L assessment reform, and the integration of listening and speaking into public examinations.

Dr. Samaraweera holds a PhD in Education and Management from Management and Science University, Malaysia, an M.Phil. in English from the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, and an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Kelaniya. His doctoral research focused on pre-service teacher burnout and mentoring as a pathway to professional self-efficacy, a theme that continues to anchor his published scholarship.

An international keynote and plenary speaker, he has presented at conferences across India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Greece, Indonesia, and the United States, including the TESOL International Convention. He is Chair of the Sri Lanka English Language Teachers’ Association and a member of TESOL International and Asia TEFL.
